Supporting our Youth During Ramadan. Ramadan is approaching, expected to begin on 18 February 2026 and end on 18 March 2026. During this period, many young people attend local mosques for late-night Tarawih prayers. A significant number of teenagers attend independently, especially from densely populated areas such as Barton Hill.
While this is a positive expression of faith and community, there is also a risk that large numbers of young people leaving mosques late at night may unintentionally contribute to antisocial behaviour (ASB) and increased risks of youth violence.
Following concerns raised by community members, we have organised a multi-agency meeting involved by police, youth organisations, community stakeholders, young people and parents. The purpose of the meeting was to Identify risks during Ramadan, share and coordinate data and community experiences, strengthen collaborative approaches and to develop proactive and preventative actions to reduce youth violence, knife crime, and ASB in the area during Ramadan and beyond.
As Bristol Youth Connect, we are committed to working with partners to help reduce and prevent youth violence and improve community safety. We strongly believe that a coordinated, community-led approach is key to creating safer neighbourhoods during Ramadan and beyond.
There are agreed actions to prevent risk of youth violence during this holy month but our message to parents and carers is, Please be mindful of the risks during this period, as more young people are out late in the evenings. We encourage you to have conversations with your children about staying safe, respecting the community, and making positive choices.
Together, we can support our young people and ensure a safe, peaceful Ramadan for everyone.
